Starting a new life in a new city with a new job is exhausting. It has been leaving me with little energy or time for cooking. However, I really wanted to make something in my kitchen with my newly unpacked dishes and supplies. The solution? The simplest and easiest and tastiest recipe I know–beer bread.
Why do I love beer bread? As mentioned above, it’s the easiest bread you can make. There are only a handful of ingredients. The measurements don’t need to be exact. The recipe is so flexible and can yield a variety of flavors. The bread is GOOD. It’s a dense bread that can be made savory or sweet.
I ate this loaf with dinner…and then with cream cheese and jelly for breakfast. And then the next day for a snack…well, you get the point. It’s good the next day, but it’s best hot out of the oven.
Beer bread (makes one loaf)
3 cups of flour
1 12 oz beer
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
optional [spices, sugar]
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together. If you want a sweeter bread, add 1/4 cup sugar and use a lighter beer (apricot beer is one of my favorites). If you want a savory bread, add in some spices/herbs. If you want an all purpose bread, don’t add anything additional.
Mix in a bottle / can of beer until combined.
Grease a bread pan and place the batter in the pan. Cut the butter into chunks and spread over the batter. The butter will melt and give the bread a golden brown color.
Bake for about 30-45 minutes, or until a knife comes out clean.
